Pay-TV remains on growth course in Germany

July 25, 2018 10.41 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

The number of pay-TV subscribers in Germany rose from 7.5 million (2016) to 7.7 million in 2017 and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from 8.4 million to 8.7 million.

This is the result of the market analysis Pay-TV in Germany 2018 German commercial broadcaster association VAUNET (formerly VPRT) presented in Munich.

For 2018, the association forecasts an increase by 0.2 to 0.3 million to around 8 million pay-TV subscribers in Germany; there will then be around 9 million subscribers in the entire German-speaking region.

Pay-TV and paid video-on-demand revenues increased last year by 15% to €3.1 billion in Germany (2016: €2.7 billion) and €3.5 billion across the three German-language markets (2016: €3 billion). These figures include pay-TV revenues which grew by 7% to €2.3 billion in Germany and €2.6 billion in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

For 2018, the association forecasts a further increase in pay-TV revenues in the German-speaking countries by around 4-5%, paid video-on-demand revenues by around 20% and thus total pay-TV and paid video-on-demand revenues by 8-10% to around €3.8 billion.
