The total number of Dutch homes using Video-on-Demand (VOD) has risen to 1.2 million during 2011. Together, they are expected to spend around €53 million.
GfK Retail & Technology Nederland has said that during 2012 paid VOD will beat sales and rental of physical carriers such as DVDs and Blu-ray discs. During 2011, the average spent per VOD home was €44.17.
According to GfK, 96% of all VOD users watch movies and TV programmes on their TV set, while just 20% uses their PC to request paid streams.
The current Top 10 of most requested movies is: 1) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2; 2) Transformers: Dark of the Moon; 3) Sint (Dutch); 4) Gooische Vrouwen (Dutch); 5) X-Men: First Class; 6) Cars 2; 7) Something Borrowed; 8) Rio; 9) Thor, and 10) Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
The main VOD platforms in the Netherlands are cablers Ziggo and UPC and IPTV provider KPN. The two cable companies operate their own VOD service, while KPN has outsourced the service to Videoland.
Video rental chains Videoland and MovieMax, both part of The Entertainment Group (TEG), also offer VOD services on connected TVs as an over-the-top service. Cinema chain Pathe has just started its Pathe Thuis VOD service with around 188 titles.
GfK plans to publish more details about the VOD market during 2012.
