The number of UK households with access to a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service has grown by three million over the last three months.
The latest Establishment Survey released by the audience researcher BARB shows that at the end of September, the number of UK households with an SVOD sub was 17 million.
This means that 60.0% of UK households have access to an SVOD service. Netflix continues to be the largest single service, increasing to 14.8m households as of Q3 2020.
BARB attributes the reason for the increase since the last available data in Q1 2020 to be down to an expansion in the number of services, such as Disney+, already available in 3.4 million households as of Q3 2020.
Amazon Prime Video also continues to grow, and has increased by 49.0% since Q3 2019, to 9.5m UK households.
BARB chief executive Justin Sampson said the increase was “no surprise” given the number of people forced to stay at home during lockdown.
“Next on our to-do list is to report viewing to SVOD services, with or without their involvement. We are making great strides thanks to the installation of meters on the WiFi routers in our panel of homes. Preliminary data show aggregate viewing levels to SVOD and video-sharing platforms, while we plan to augment these with SVOD content ratings in 2021.”
