RTL reports strong on-demand growth

August 24, 2012 07.34 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The RTL Group has reported a 33% growth in online video views on all RTL platforms across Europe to a total of 1.2 billion.

The broadcaster expects catch-up TV viewing to grow to 10% of the total viewing time by the end of 2015. The figures were part of an analyst presentation about the H1 2012 results.

Online video viewing showed the strongest growth in Germany. There were 634 million views during the first six months of 2012, as compared to 452 million during the same period in 2011.

In the Netherlands, the number of total video views grew 26%, up from 186 million to 233 million. France showed a more modest growth, up 13% from 258 million to 292 million.

During the past three years, RTL report a total of 715 million video views during the six months in 2010, plus 30% to 928 million in the first half of 2011 to the total of 1.2 billion during H1 2012 (plus 33%).

RTL is also very active with mobile services. During the past few years a total of 220 apps were launched across the RTL footprint. There were a total of 65 million downloads. During the first six months of the year, the number of mobile views grew 92% in France and 99% in Germany.

RTL expects that the total consumption of TV will continue to grow from a total of 231 minutes in 2011 to 248 minutes in 2015; linear viewing is growing from an estimated 221 minutes during 2011 to 224 minutes in 2015.

In 20125, RTL expects 12 minutes viewing time for catch-up TV an a further 12 minutes for OTT viewing.

In a joint statement, Anke Schäferkordt and Guillaume de Posch, joint CEOs of RTL Group, said: “Digital: to build sustainable new business models with strong cross-platform presence on all devices and screens, with internet properties and new on-demand services – our brands will be present wherever our audiences look for quality content.”
