Dutch digital TV penetration reaches 72.9%

January 31, 2012 09.44 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Digital television now reaches 72.9% of all Dutch homes, according to the latest Media Standard Survey from TNS NIPO. A total of 35% own a hard disk recorder.

Digital TV penetration rose from 69% in the first half of 2011 to 72.9% at the end of 2011. Interestingly, the percentage of digital TV for the main set (living room) is just 68.4%. This lower percentage might be explained by the fact that people buy a DVB-T tuner for second or third TV sets.

The average number of TV sets in Dutch homes is 1.7. In terms of reception, digital cable leads (on all TV sets in the home combined) with 51.1%, followed by analogue cable (48.9%), DVB-T (Digitenne) with 10.5% and satellite DTH with 5.4%. IPTV connection stand at 4.8% and 2.3% have FTTH (fibre).

The above numbers cannot be added together, as homes might have different ways of receiving television on different TV sets across the house.

Compared with the first half of 2011, there is a slight increase in the number of digital cable TV homes (up from 46.1%), while the percentage of Digitenne homes (down from 11.2%) and satellite homes (down from 5.9%) are decreasing (although these last two figures are insignificant).

More than one-third of all Dutch homes have a hard disc recorder (36%), which is either a stand-alone product (20%) or an integrated tuner/PVR (16%). The number of HDD homes is growing fast, up from 32% in the first half of 2011. 26% of all homes have a game console connected to their TV set.

One in 12 homes now has a connected TV, with 8.3% of all homes saying they are connected to the web with their TV set.

Mobile TV is hardly happening in the Netherland with just 2 – 3% saying they watched at least one programme on a mobile device. However, 36% of all people say they watched TV programmes on the computer. The most commonly viewed TV is catch-up rather than live TV (3%). 5% say they watched programmes on the computer that are not available on regular TV,

The Media Standard Survey from TNS NIPO was carried out amongst 6,212 homes and 5,313 people from 13 years and older.
