The Portuguese pay-TV operator TVTel is to migrate its DTH (satellite) offer to the Hispasat satellite system, located at 30 degrees West, the same that carries the offers of rivals ZON TV Cabo and MeoSat.
The move has been motivated by “technical reasons” aimed at “improving services provided to clients”. It may also be that the company believes it will be able to further build its subscriber base if it is at the more established DTH position for the Portuguese market.
Another novelty will be the introduction of the Nagra conditional access system, as when TV Tel launched its DTH service it was with the Conax system.
Additionally, the operator will also have to the re-position the satellite dishes of clients as they are currently pointed at the Eurobird 9 satellite (9 degrees East). TVTel has already made clear that subscribers will not suffer any additional charges due to the migration, which should be completed by September 7.
