Portugal Telecom’s triple-play service Meo, which provides pay-TV, internet and fixed telephony, has topped the 300,000 subscriber mark.
This figure represents around 43% of ADSL clients and 11% of Portugal Telecom’s traffic-generating lines, with 89,000 clients being added in the current quarter. According to Portugal Telecom, Meo’s penetration rate accounts for 7.6% of Portuguese households, with a 13-14% market share, compared to 80% for Zon TV Cabo, a company which formed part of the Portugal Telecom group until November 2007.
Meo had a soft launch in July 2007, with a full commercial launch taking place in April of this year, with the goal of competing with Portuguese pay-TV market leader, Zon TV Cabo.
The service, which is available on IPTV, satellite and mobile, offers over 100 TV channels and more than 1.500 movies on demand.
Rival operator, Sonaecom Clix, has announced its entire IPTV offering, with more than 100 TV channels, will be unencrypted, in the period December 22-28.
