Ofcom has announced a consultation on a new licence for Channel 4, ahead of the expiry of its current licence on 31 December 2024.
“Our audience research shows that Channel 4 remains a valued part of the UK’s broadcasting landscape. It also continues to deliver content promoting new and diverse voices and perspectives and plays a crucial role in supporting the creative economy outside London,” the regulator said in a statement.
Ofcom has pointed out the amount of change since Channel 4’s last audience was awarded in 2014, notably the decline in traditional broadcast TV, while younger people – who traditionally form Channel 4’s core audience – are turning to online video streaming services.
The broadcaster is looking to change some of its existing licence obligations to support its digital growth and transformation. The regulator says it wants to incorporate this into the licence while safeguarding its investment in distinctive UK content and protecting interests of viewers who rely on traditional, scheduled broadcast television.
Requirements for Channel 4’s evening and weekend news programming will remain, though some obligations will be reduced to give flexibility to increase investment in its online content and services.
