Broadcasters in the UK and France enjoyed record audiences on Saturday evening as England took on France in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The match was watched by a peak audience of 23 million across ITV and ITVX as Les Bleus narrowly defeated the Three Lions.
For UK audiences, the game drew the tournament’s biggest audience and the highest peak on any channel this year and the biggest since the final of last year’s European Championship between England and Italy.
ITV also had its best Saturday night on record, though the stats only go back to 2002.
England v France was streamed 15.3m times and Morocco’s win over Portugal, shown live on ITV earlier on Saturday, was streamed 8.2m times. In total, there were 30m streams on ITVX, which is the best ever for ITVX or the former ITV Hub.
Meanwhile in France Médiamétrie says TF1 secured 17.72 million viewers between 8pm and 10pm CET, representing an audience share of 62.8%.
The French audience is the best so far, beating the Round of 16 against Poland, which was watched by 14.32 million.
The afternoon match that saw Morocco winning against Portugal brought in 7.5 million viewers toa TF1, record for World Cup match not featuring the national team.
