South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies says she aims to complete the country’s protracted move to digital broadcast by next March.
In a statement, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said dual illumination of analogue and digital channels would end on March 31, 2023.
It follows last June’s ruling by the Constitutional Court that said the process was urgent and that the minister should inform the public about the switchover “with a sense of urgency”.
Households that need assistance with set-top boxes were required to register for help and with a fall in such requests between April and June last year, September 30, 2022 was set as the date when registrations would cease.
A promotional campaign has also been running on SABC Television and Radio, and Community Broadcasters.
A consultation will now run through to January 27, 2023.
