DTH satellite is the leading TV reception infrastructure in Germany.
With 17.00 million TV households, DTH satellite reaches a market share of 45.7% (2020: 17.12 million or 45.4%). Cable TV ranks second with 15.58 million TV households and a market share of 41.9% (2020: 15.85 million or 42.0%).
IPTV is used by 3.31 million TV households, which corresponds to a market share of 8.9% (2020: 3.24 million or 8.6%). The number of DTT households amounts to 1.33 million or the equivalent of 3.6 % (2020: 1.54 million or 4.1%).
The number of HD households in Germany rose slightly in 2021 to 33.76 million (2020: 33.39 million). This means that 91% of all TV households in Germany received TV in HD quality. Satellite is the leading distribution infrastructure for HD with 15.93 million households reached, followed by cable with 13.24 million, IPTV (3.26 million) and DTT (1.33 million).
The growth of HD households has thus flattened noticeably compared to previous years – and the HD gap remains considerable: 3.46 million TV households still receive TV solely in SD resolution, including around 1.07 million satellite households.
These are the core results of the new Astra TV Monitor 2021, which market research institute Kantar compiles annually on behalf of the satellite operator. They are based on 37.22 million TV households in Germany (2020: 37.75 million). The survey of a total of 6,004 households throughout Germany took place at the end of 2021. The figures refer to the main TV set in each household.
