The number of subscribers to Walt Disney Company’s streaming service Disney+ has reached 103.6 million.
The 100 million mark was passed on March 10.
However, the figures still disappointed Wall Street, which was expecting greater growth. The apparent sluggishness was blamed in part on the early end to the Indian Premier League to which Disney holds the domestic rights.
The average subscriber is paying a monthly $3.99 for the package that also includes content from National Geographic and the recently launched entertainment-based Star+.
Results at Disney+ were comparable with prior year quarter of 33.5 million subscribers, but as the subscriber base increases, so do programming and production, marketing and technology costs.
Revenues at international channels decreased by 4% – Disney is closing a number of its linear channels in favour of Disney+.
Interestingly, while Hulu was stable, the ESPN+ streaming service increased its base by 75% to 13.8 million.
