DTH satellite remains the most-used TV reception method in Germany.
This is the result of the Astra TV-Monitor 2018 which market research institute Kantar TNS compiles each year on behalf of Astra satellite operator SES.
However, both DTH satellite and cable TV lost households, according to the survey. With 17.49 million TV households and a market share of 45.6%, satellite was the leading TV reception method last year (2017: 17.72 million TV households/45.9% market share). Cable TV stayed number 2 with 16.18 million TV households and a market share of 42.2% (2017: 16.39 million TV households/42.5% market share).
IPTV grew by 140,000 households to 2.78 million households while the number of DTT households rose by 50,000 to 1.88 million.
HDTV continued its growth course in Germany in 2018: The number of HD households increased to 29.84 million (2017: 27.48 million). In total, almost 78% of all TV households in Germany received their TV channels in HD quality.
Among the German HD households, DTH satellite remains the leading TV reception method with 13.51 million households followed by cable (12.08 million), IPTV (2.52 million) and DTT (1.73 million).
Compared with 2012, HD reception has more than doubled in Germany. 8.5 million TV households still receive their TV channels in SD resolution.
On a global basis, SES has reported an increase by 4 million TV households in 2018 to a total of 355 million.
