Latvia’s National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP) has imposed a three-month ban on the retransmission of Russian channel Rossiya RTR.
In a statement, it says it has detected “irregularities” in the channel’s programmes that included hate speech and incitement to war.
Although these referenced Ukraine rather than Latvia, NEPLP says that this is irrelevant as it is against the law.
As Rossiya RTR is registered in Sweden, NEPLP has sent notifications to the EC and the Swedish regulator.
Furthermore, it has called for changes to the TV package distributed by the incumbent telco Lattelecom, which is backed by the Latvian state, to make it balanced and meet “the interests of national security”.
