Alibaba Cloud launches ApsaraVideo for VoD in Europe

September 17, 2018 14.23 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, has announced at the IBC Conference that the ApsaraVideo for VoD service will be available to the customers outside China for the first time.

An introduction of Alibaba Cloud’s proven end-to-end Video on Demand (VoD) platform to European customers, the platform availability builds on the commitment of the company to cater for rapidly increasing local customer demand.

ApsaraVideo for VoD is a streaming platform to support on-demand content, based on Alibaba Cloud’s leading hosting and delivery networks and large-scale distributed real-time transcoding technology. The integrated platform provides high-definition and uninterrupted services in an accessible way, while offering low latency and high concurrency to broadcasters.

The platform offers a web-based manasgement console, APIs, and software development kits, so customers can manage their own on-demand video end-to-end or integrate with their own apps and services. The AI-powered metadata enrichment allows users to ingest and process their content to review, understand what they have, and edit both content and metadata with an option to enable the fingerprint security feature for copyright protection.

The media processing feature was designed based on the needs of existing Alibaba Cloud users. In the past, users dedicated time and resources to purchase, build, and manage transcoding software and hardware, as well as perform sophisticated configuration optimization, transcode parameter adaptation, and other operations. The media processing feature has changed all this by enhancing the elasticity of the cloud; this service provides transcoding capabilities to satisfy tomorrow’s transcoding demands all while reducing wastes.

“Extending our ApsaraVideo for VoD service to the European market is an important milestone for Alibaba Cloud as we deliver on our strategy to be an enabler for media innovations, helping broadcasters and media enterprises do business anywhere they are,” said Yeming Wang, general manager of Alibaba Cloud EMEA.

“Our market leading end-to-end VoD platform will provide our customers in Europe with even more advanced solutions, helping to improve audience engagement and improve business operation efficiency.”

From October onwards, European customers will be able to access AsparaVideo for VoD through Alibaba Cloud’s European-based availability zones. Similar to the extensive list of customers in China and the rest of Asia, users will be able to edit their high-quality 4k videos on Alibaba Cloud, without the need for a physical edit suite. Ensuring that security is at the highest level, customers will also be able to add fingerprint ID to their assets to prevent copyright infringement.
