NHK World-Japan expands activities in Germany

May 14, 2018 09.52 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

NHK-World Japan, the 24-hour international English-language channel from Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, is expanding its activities in Germany following the launch on Unitymedia’s cable network in November 2017.

NHK World-Japan will participate in Japan Tag on May 26, 2018 in Düsseldorf. The showcase of Japanese culture attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, enjoying a variety of music, dance, sports and culinary art. At the channel’s stand visitors can experience its variety of contents and have the opportunity to meet NHK’ mascot character Domo.

“We look forward to Japan Tag which will provide an authentic insight into Japanese culture and everyday life,” said Yoshihiko Shimizu, President and CEO of NHK subsidiary Japan International Broadcasting. “Our participation will further increase the awareness for our channel which is now available to Germany’s largest Japanese community in Düsseldorf on Unitymedia’s cable network.”

NHK World-Japan will also participate in Japanese film festival Nippon Connection from May 31 to June 2, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main, presenting exclusive screenings that give an inside view in Japanese life, history and traditions.

In addition to cable networks including Unitymedia, NetCologne, wilhelm.tel and Deutsche Telekom’s TV package for the housing industry, NHK World-Japan broadcasts to German viewers via satellite on Astra (19.2° East) and Eutelsat Hotbird (13° East), on Freenet TV Connect, the NHK World TV app (iOS/Android), Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV as well as through a live-stream on its website.
