German video-on-demand (VOD) service maxdome will remain in the red this year in contrary to earlier expectations by parent company ProSiebenSat.1.
“If you look at the whole year, maxdome will not be profitable. But we aim for this in 2018,” CEO Thomas Ebeling told German business magazine Euro am Sonntag.
“We now have one million maxdome subscribers. The usage figures could be higher, but they are okay. The reason is that video-on-demand has not really achieved its breakthrough in Germany yet,” said Ebeling.
He added that maxdome had to work on considerably differentiating itself from Netflix “without increasing the cost basis.”
In May 2017, Ebeling said that ProSiebensat.1 expects maxdome to be profitable by the end of the year.
