Ebook: How Intelligence Can Help Combat Piracy and Expand Consumer Choice

November 9, 2016 09.04 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

Irdeto Piracy EbookHow do you spot a pirate?

No, it’s not the opening line of a joke, it’s a deadly serious question.

Statistically, there are plenty of people living on your block, working in your building, or driving down your street who have watched pirate content. In fact, pirates may be your biggest competition.

So what makes a consumer pick a rival service – including an illegal one – over yours?

For some it’s purely the price, but that is far from being the only reason.

According to research for UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom, the most prolific consumers of pirate content also spend far more than the average person on legal content. Up to 300% more, in fact.

For these users – call them “super consumers” – piracy isn’t just about saving money. It is the only route to getting what they want. It might be a particular show or sports event that’s not available legally in their territory. Or it might be that the pirates just provide an easier to use method to get to the content the consumer desire with the customer service they expect.
