German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland will launch its Ultra HD service in Germany and Austria in October 2016.
Existing subscribers can order the necessary new receiver Sky+ Pro from now on. The box is available for a one-off €99 fee for the duration of their subscription. New customers can order the device from October 2016.
Video-on-demand (VOD) service Sky On Demand will offer a selection of UHD movies from October 2016. They are downloaded onto the receiver’s hard-disk overnight and can be accessed by pressing the blue button on the remote control. The first titles in the new video format will be Hotel Transylvania 2, The Walk, Salt and Evil Dead. Series and other content will follow.
The 1TB hard-disk through which the currently running programme can be paused, rewound and recorded enables a personal archive offering up to three times as much space as a conventional Sky+ receiver.
With the box available both for DTH satellite and cable reception, customers will also be able to watch selected live football games of the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League on the two new channels Sky Sport Bundesliga UHD and Sky Sport UHD from October 2016. Further live sports will follow.
All Sky customers signed up for a Premium HD subscription can access the broadcaster’s Ultra HD offer free of charge for 12 months.
