With the advent of Enhanced Content like 4K Ultra HD and High-Dynamic Range (HDR), MovieLabs, the joint technology venture of the major Hollywood studios, has aimed to address the rampant piracy of 1080 HD content with a comprehensive set of new security recommendations. Though posed as “recommendations,” these measures will be required by studios for pay-TV service providers and other licensees to have access to Enhanced Content.
This paper highlights the key trends leading to the need for adoption of Enhanced Content Protection (ECP) measures as specified by MovieLabs, the nature of those measures, and some of the open questions that still need to be answered regarding how Enhanced Content needs to be protected in order to minimize theft and maximize revenues. It also examines the areas where the customers of leading content security vendors may already have a significant advantage in meeting studio requirements, as well as the technologies that may need to be implemented under the new licensing conditions.
