Liberty Global to unify German cable brands

November 27, 2014 19.36 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

UnitymediaUS cable operator Liberty Global will solely use the brand Unitymedia for its cable business in Germany from spring 2015.

The brand Kabel BW currently used in federal state Baden-Württemberg will be dropped. There won’t be any changes for the locations and employees in Baden-Württemberg apart from the name change, assures Unitymedia Kabel BW.

The company will then act in the three federal states it serves under the single brand Unitymedia which has so far only been used in North-Rhine Westphalia and Hessen.

On July 1, 2012 the company created by the merger of Unitymedia and Kabel BW adopted the umbrella brand Unitymedia Kabel BW while the products continued to be marketed under the Unitymedia brand in North-Rhine Westphalia and Hessen and under the Kabel BW brand in Baden-Württemberg.

With the unification of its brand names, the cable operator wants to strengthen itself in the competition with nationwide and international companies and sharpen the value of recognition of the Unitymedia brand.

The company has been harmonising the product offerings of Unitymedia and Kabel BW in the past months. On November 3, 2014 Kabel BW introduced multimedia box Horizon which was previously only available at Unitymedia. On December 1, 2014 the TV channel lineup will be further harmonised.

Liberty Global acquired Unitymedia in 2009 and Kabel BW two years later.
