A record number of 206.8 million streams were requested for Uitzending Gemist, the catch-up service of the Dutch public broadcasters, in 2011.
The online video service was launched in 2005, currently offers over 90,000 (!) videos and is available on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones. It is available with special versions for mobile, Android, iPhone and iPad.
The figures, which were published by the Dutch public broadcasters, do not include usage of the service on other platforms, such as those from cablers UPC and Ziggo, FTTH operator Glashart Media and IPTV provider KPN. The figures for 2011 show an increase of 16% in the usage of the service.
Research by SKO showed that Dutch viewers spent an average of 191 minutes a day in front of their TV set. This is exact the same number of minutes as in 2010.
Share in viewing time of the Dutch pubic broadcasters went down from 37.6% to 34.3%. RTL Nederland increased its share from 28.3% to 30.2%, while SBS went down from 19.7% to 19.3%.
Digital thematic channels reached 66.5% of the population. Best watched of the digital channels was the newly launched 24Kitchen from Fox Channels Benelux with 17.1%, followed by Universal’s 13th Street (16.8%) and Journaal 24 with 14.8%. Secret 24, the incidental 24/7 live channel accompanying SBS’s Secret Story also managed 14.8%.
RTL Crime was at number 4 with 14.5% and premium live football channel Eredivisie Live 1 came in fifth position with 14.4%.
