Russia’s pay-TV market has recovered to pre-global economic crisis levels in some respects but not in others.
Quoting research by J’son & Partners, AKTR and Rai Novosti report that the number of set-top boxes (cable, satellite and IPTV) this year is likely to be – at around 2.5 million – 11% higher than in 2008.
However, within that figure, the number of satellite TV receivers sold this year will only be 1.6 million, compared to 1.9 million in 2008.
Cable box sales will meanwhile be one and a half times greater and IPTV boxes – at around 600,000 – six times more than in 2008.
On the other hand, set top box sales revenues this year are projected to be R151 million (€3.59 million), or 1.63 times less than in 2008.
Furthermore, revenues are likely to only grow by 1% next year, while the total number of boxes, in all sectors, will remain unchanged.
