YouTube names first 96 channels

October 31, 2011 19.55 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Traditional TV broadcasters are almost absent from the first slate of channels announced by YouTube. Interestingly, at least two publishers are joining the line-up, the Wall Street Journal and Hearst Magazines.

The first of these new original channels will appear on YouTube starting next month and will continue over the next year, according to YouTube’s Robert Kyncl in a blog.

Freemantle has one channel planned for Youtube, a yet-to-be –named Pets & Animals channel, while Lionsgate plans a fitness channel .

The Wall Street Journal will bring a lifestyle channel featuring a daily show based on Off Duty, covering design, fashion, travel, wine, food and tech. Hearst Magazines has outlined two channels, Car and Driver Television and Style on Location (name TBD).

There will be some sports, such as the WWE Fan Nation channel which promises “new, exclusive, behind-the-scenes videos that give unheralded access to WWE superstars and divas outside the ring.”. Soccer United Marketing will launch Kick TV.

Thomson Reuters is scheduling the Reuters.com news channel, online magazine Slate will have Slate News Central, while TED conferences will introduce an education channel.

Los Angeles-based Maker Studios will be launching new channels focused on programming for Hispanic viewers (called Tutele), Moms (called the Mom’s View) and Music (called the Maker Music Network), as part of the YouTube initiative. Last month, comScore ranked Maker Studios the #4 most watched network on YouTube.

Nerdiness is promised by The Nerdist Channel and also YouTube hit The Onion will have its own channel. Demand Media a number of eHow channels

Deepak Chopra has Chopra Well. Another one is called Everyday Health TV , while DECA plans to bring the women’s lifestyle channel KinCommunity.

A full list of all the 96 channels can be found on the YouTube website.
