Viacom has informed a New York Federal Court of its intention to launch an appeal against the June copyright ruling that went the way of YouTube.
The owner of MTV Networks and the Paramount film studio had been seeking $1 billion (€814.7 million) in damages. The case had begun when Viacom accused YouTube of running “tens of thousands” of video clips that had been uploaded without permission.
Viacom had argued that YouTube and Google had demonstrated that the tools it existed to prevent the piracy of copyrighted material. Consequently, there remained hundreds and thousands of videos that had been illegally distributed before the tools were put in place.
