Intelsat secures deals with broadcasters

September 10, 2009 07.56 Europe/London By Robert Briel

IBC 2009. Stand 1.C71. Intelsat has announced agreements with Globecast, Telefonica and Televisa for the use of its satellite fleet.

Mexico’s Televisa wants to expand international distribution of its programming. Under this contract, Intelsat will distribute Televisa’s pay-TV programming to viewers throughout Europe via the Intelsat 905 satellite located at 335.5 degrees East. The broadcaster will utilise Intelsat’s teleport in Fuchsttadt, Germany, for turnaround services of its content into Europe.

Televisa has also secured additional capacity via the Intelsat 11 satellite, located at 317 degrees East to expand its programming bouquet with new channels for the Latin American cable TV sector. The agreement also provides Televisa with supplemental capacity on the Galaxy 16 satellite, located at 99 degrees West, to augment its domestic distribution requirements.

Telefonica signed a contract for capacity on the Intelsat 905 satellite (IS-905), located at 335.5 degrees East. The multi-year contract offers Telefonica the satellite infrastructure it requires to deliver content throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands from Spain’s leading pay-TV channels broadcaster, Teuve.

The contract with GlobeCast is for occasional use (OU) capacity that spans Intelsat’s entire satellite fleet. The multi-year contract offers GlobeCast increased satellite transmissions infrastructure to fulfill its customer needs for distribution of live sports, breaking news and special events. Intelsat has dedicated approximately 140 transponders across its entire fleet specifically to be used for OU services.
