The leading CME-backed Slovakian broadcaster TV Markiza may launch a second channel.
Speaking to Medialne, its programming director Gorazd Slaka said there are plans for a thematic service but would not confirm that it would be aimed at female viewers and make its debut next year.
However, he compared the current situation in Slovakia, which is still served by a limited number of channels, to that in Slovenia.
In the latter, which has a population of only 2 million (as opposed to five million in Slovakia), viewers can already receive 50 local language channels, of which five are national, along with 60 foreign ones.
Launching a thematic channel in Slovakia would reflect CME’s regional strategy and counter the threat posed by its main commercial competitor Joj TV, which last month launched a new channel named Joj Plus.
