The Polish media entrepreneur Zygmunt Solorz-Zak has provided interesting insights into the future plans of the national commercial broadcaster Polsat, his prime asset.
In a wide-ranging interview with the local press, he expressed interest in the acquisition of fibre-optic networks, which would be used to deliver TV services. He also said that Polsat plans to re-launch two existing thematic channels – Zdrowie i Uroda and Play TV – this August and subsequently add two more to its portfolio.
Significantly, Solorz-Zak ruled out the sale of any shares in Polsat this year, explaining the recent failure of Axel Springer to secure a stake in the broadcaster as being down to a lack of understanding between the two parties.
He also dismissed suggestions that News Corp had made a bid to buy into Polsat and said he was against foreign channels being carried on a proposed second Polish DTT multiplex, believing the market was not ready for the competition.
