A contest to select the president of Teleradio-Moldova and heads of both its national TV and radio stations has got under way. According to the Observers Council of Teleradio Moldova, applications will close on March 23, with the winners being announced five days later. Last week the running of Teleradio-Moldova was criticised by the head of the OSCE mission to Moldova, who said it had made “almost no progress towards becoming a truly independent public service broadcaster since its formal transformation in August 2004.” Despite its problems, Teleradio-Moldova still managed to launch its first ever satellite channel in January. On air for 24 hours daily, Moldova International is distributed by Eutelsat’s W2 and can be received throughout Europe, Western Russia, North Africa, Madagascar and parts of the Middle East. (CD)
