Worldwide shipments of flat-panel TVs recovered in the second quarter after a disappointing start to the year.
According to preliminary data in the new Worldwide Monthly TV Tracker issued by IHS-owned Displaybank, they rose to 48.9 million units in Q2, up 3.6% on the figure of 47.2 million three months earlier.
Within the Q2 total, LCD TV shipments rose by 3.4%, following a 29.3% drop in the first quarter.
Although worldwide plasma shipments are generally declining, they rose by 6.6% in Q2, which was in sharp contracts to a 39.5% reduction in Q1.
Significantly, Samsung remained the market leader in the LCD segment, which accounts for the majority of flat screen sales, accounting for 19.2% of unit sales in Q2 (compared to 19.3% in Q1).
LG Electronics was in second place, its 13.2% share of shipments being unchanged on the first quarter.
