The contribution of BBC Research & Development towards DVB-T2 has been recognised by the Royal Television Society in its annual Innovation Awards.
In naming BBC R&D as the winner of the ‘Under the Bonnet Award’ the judges said that DVB-T2 would transform the viewing experience of millions through a project that called for technical ingenuity, patient determination and international cooperation. The technology is currently being rolled out across the UK and will be officially switched on as Freeview HD in the North West on December 1.
Sky News’ iPhone application took the ‘On the Move Award’, the jury commending the broadcaster on the excellent video quality, and looking forward to how Sky might use the development’s sharing capacity that allows viewers to submit their own user generated content.
No stranger to prizegivings, the BBC iPlayer was given the ‘Judges’ Award’. Chairman Jeff Henry commented that the service had set new standards in its simple consumer interface. Tribute was paid to the hard work of BBC staff and in particular the contribution of Anthony Rose.
