Ethernet: The most popular LAN technology in use today. The IEEE standard 802.3 defines the rules for configuring an Ethernet network. It is a 10Mbit/s, CSMA/CD baseband network that runs over thin coax, thick coax, twisted pair or fiber optic cable.
Extended Basic Tiers: Frequency space on the cable networks used for services besides the basic TV service.
Encryption: The process of changing information to make it unreadable without special means. The consumer will usually have a smart card issued by the pay-TV operator that gives them the entitlement to view the services paid for under their subscription.
EuroDOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification): An industry standard that specifies how cable modems communicate over cable TV lines. A DOCSIS modem will work on any DOCSIS compatible cable TV network.
Eurohits (Euro Headend in the Sky): UPC’s organisation that resides at the Digital Media Center and handles the technical facilities including the distribution of NVOD movies to local servers across Europe for local play-out on cable systems. Eurohits also offers centralised subscriber management and conditional access systems to its clients.
EPG (Electronic Programme Guide): An on-screen display of programming options that enables TV viewers to plan their viewing without using a printed guide. An EPG provides additional information about a program, makes it possible to switch to a specific program if it’s currently being transmitted and can remind you of a specific program when it’s about to start.
