Russia tests own TV encoding system

March 15, 2023 09.57 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Alexei Volin, the general director of the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC), has revealed that Russia has begun testing its own TV encoding system.

Speaking at the Digital Transformation Forum, he added that it will become a universal solution for all satellite operators and replace foreign systems.

Volin continued: “A year and a half ago, almost all communication satellites were produced according to the principle “Russian platform – imported payload”. As part of the ICC, we came to the conclusion that Russian enterprises are ready to create their own payloads. As a result, today the fully domestic spacecraft Express-AMU4 is in production. This was the first project within the framework of the ICC”.

The second direction was the transfer of space communication centers (SCC) and mission control centers (MCC) to their software, because. some foreign partners simply stopped servicing the software installed at the facilities. “Today, both we and Gazprom Space Systems and Gonts have TsUPs and TsKSs that have fully adapted Russian products”.

Separate work had to be carried out with the receiving equipment on the ground, primarily for the VSAT network. “We analysed the market and found out that about 150,000 foreign-made receiving devices are currently operating. Therefore, RSCC, together with RTCOMM and MIPT, are thinking about creating analogues of imported VSAT stations”.

The stable operation of the Russian constellation of communications and broadcasting satellites has become of particular importance in recent months.

“Now there are frequent attempts to replace or jam the TV signal. Work on a completely domestic solution that can neutralise these risks is ongoing. We are talking about the creation of a hardware-software complex capable of determining a targeted interference in the operation of a spacecraft. We hope that it will be ready by the end of the year”.
