Slovenia’s Constitutional Court has stayed the implementation of amendment to the law governing the public broadcaster RTVS.
N1 reports that the suspension covers three transitional provisions which regulate the final constitution of the RTVS Council and, consequently, other new bodies of public broadcasting, such as the president and members of the board.
It adds that the Constitutional Court also concluded that it will treat the initiative to assess the constitutionality of the RTVS Act, which was first signed by the president of the Programme Council, Peter Gregorcic, as an absolute priority and immediately proceed with the substantive assessment of the amendment. However, it is not clear how long this will take.
Broadband TV News notes that a referendum on the future governance of the Slovenian public broadcaster RTVS was held late last year.
The public voted overwhelming in favour of amending the law governing RTVS and the result was supported by the EBU.
It was also widely seen as a positive step to safeguarding the independence of public service broadcasting in Slovenia.
