The Latvian regulator NEPLP has cancelled the broadcasting licence of the independent Russian channel TV Rain (Dohzd) on the grounds of national security and public order.
Its decision will come into effect of the night of Thursday, December 8, when TV Rain will have to stop broadcasting in Latvia. NEPLP took the action following a series of violations by TV Rain, which included not providing a Latvian language track (which was required under the terms of its broadcast permit in Latvia, and for which it was fined); calling Russian forces “our army” and showing Crimea as part of Russia (again fined); and appealing for help for Russian soldiers who have been mobilised. NEPLP also referred to a letter it had received from the Latvian Security Service (VDD) voicing its concerns about TV Rain.
Commenting on the decision, which can be appealed, NEPLP’s head Ivars Abolins said: “Evaluating the set of violations, NEPLP is convinced that the management of “TV Rain” does not understand and does not realize the significance and seriousness of the violations, therefore they cannot operate in the territory of Latvia”.
Although TV Rain will still be available over the internet in Latvia, it has reported that the regulator will also seek to block online access to the channel.
