The executive director of the 8K Association has warned the European Union could ban the sale of 8K TVs due to energy-saving measures.
“We are working to influence the EU commission on energy regulations harmful to the 8K ecosystem,” said Chris Chinnock, in a statement released ahead of the 4KHDR Summit summit next month.
Energy saving measures proposed by the European Commission have resulted in the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI). In turn, this has led to a ruling that as of March 1, 2023, televisions designed for the reception of 4K signals must not exceed an EEI of 0.90.
The problem is that 8K devices have four times as many pixels as their 4K counterparts and if manufacturers are unable to adapt their technology, 8K televisions will be forced to withdraw from the market.
This eighth edition of the 4KHDR Summit will be held on November 14 and 15, in person, at the National Digital Content Pole, in Malaga, and from November 16 to 18 virtually.
