Call to Action on European content piracy

October 5, 2022 12.35 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Over 100 organisations from across media, sports, music and culture have written to the European Commission to take decisive legislative action to tackle piracy of live content.

The Commission is in the process of finalising its work programme for 2023. Organisations including AMC Networks International, beIN Sports, England and Wales Cricket Board, Discovery+, Paramount, Sky, TF1 and UEFA want to make sure piracy remains at the top of the agenda.

The signatories are calling on the European Commission to legislate to protect rights holders, sports bodies and broadcasters alike. They want a guarantee that notified illegal content is taken down immediately and blocked before the live event terminates. They argue such measures would build on existing European and national laws to deliver effective tools to fight and disable piracy networks.
