Netflix has announced its £5.99 entry-level package in the UK will increase in price for the first time in 10 years. The increase comes ahead of the release of the second series of the most popular Netflix show, Bridgerton, later this month.
The streamer has confirmed that its basic and standard packages will increase by £1 and its premium tier by £2 with immediate effect. Similar price increases will take place in Ireland. Existing members will be given 30 days notice before the raise becomes effective.
The basic subscription will increase by £5.99 to £6.99, standard moves from £9.99 to £10.99, while a premium subscription including four different devices and ultra high definition content rises to £15.99.
However, competition between streamers for subscribers and content is fierce. The UK is Netflix’s biggest production hub outside the United States and Canada, with a content budget of $1 billion in 2020.
A Netflix spokesperson said: “We have always been focused on providing our members both quality and clear value for their membership. Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalogue and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry. We offer a range of plans so members can choose a price that works best for them.”
According to the BARB establishment survey, 16.8 million homes had access to Netflix in Q4 2021, 4 million homes ahead of its nearest rival Amazon Prime Video.
