The coronavirus pandemic and the need to stay at home helped Roku towards record revenues in 2020.
The streaming service passed 50 million accounts thanks to the popularity of the Roku streaming players and integrated TVs. In 2020, Roku was the No.1 smart TV operating system in the United States.
Net revenues increased by 58% year-on-year to $1,778 million, while gross profit climbed 63% to $808 million.
In the UK, Roku launched The Roku channel, adding BT Sport to the platform, while in Ireland a deal was signed with the public broadcaster RTE.
There was no update on Quibi, the short form video streaming service that closed in October after just six months of operations. Roku paid shy of $100 million for content developed for the platform, but as yet there’s no news on when the content will be released.
