5G first for MTS

July 29, 2020 09.45 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

MTS has become the first company in Russia to be awarded a 5G licence.

It was obtained from the regulator Roskomnadzor and valid until July 16,2025. It will allow the company to offer services, initially to business customers and large manufacturing enterprises, in the 24.25-24.65 GHz frequency range in 83 regions of the country.

Commenting on the development, MTS president Alexey Kornya said: “Obtaining the first 5G licence in Russia is a historic moment for the industry. We have become one step closer to a new era in the history of communication, digitalisation and the development of new IT solutions and products. For MTS, fifth-generation technologies are an important tool for even more active development of the product ecosystem under construction, primarily in the field of automation projects for business users. The 5G standard will allow corporate clients to actively use technologies of artificial intelligence, the internet of things, augmented and virtual reality for remote control of equipment, the development of unmanned vehicles, interactive training programs and the creation of the latest quality control systems in production. We still have a lot to do to make 5G technologies truly massive, but it is already obvious that they will be in demand in almost all industries and will become one of the most important drivers of the country’s economic development in the coming years”.
