Fox Sports NL ceases support for smart TV and Apple TV apps

July 6, 2020 12.33 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Subscribers to Fox Sports in the Netherlands are no longer able view the channel on big TV screens from LG and Samsung and also not on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K media players.

Previously, its been possible to view the channel, which has coverage of Eredivisie football through apps provided by manufacturers LG and Samsung as well as the Apple TV box. However, Fox will continue to support apps for tablets and smart phones including iOS, iPadOS and Android, it will continue to be possible to stream the content to a TV via Chromecast or Airplay, the process known as casting.

In a statement, Fox Sports said the discontinuation of support for the apps was a result in a change to its online platform.

The move comes at an interesting time, as Fox is currently in a distribution spat with the country’s largest cable operator, VodafoneZiggo. The operator has rejected Dutch live football carriage deal as proposed by Fox claiming it will cost too much because the broadcaster insists that VdafoneZiggo pays for all connected homes, not just the ones subscribing to the sports channel.
