Pay-TV revenues reached a new high in Spain last year despite a reduction in subscriber numbers.
Data published by the regulator CNMC shows that they amounted to a record €572.3 million in the second quarter, or 4.4% more than a year earlier.
However, the number of pay-TV subscribers fell by 85,000 in the quarter, mainly due to the end of the football season.
The pay-TV subscriber total at the end of Q2 stood at 6.75 million, with the two most used technologies being IPTV (offered through fibre and xDSL networks) with 4.56 million subscribers and cable TV with 1.3 million subscribers.
FTA TV, on the other hand, saw its revenues fall by 9% year-on-year in Q2 to €461.1 million.
In terms of TV advertising in Q2 2019, €446.7 million went to FTA services and €28.1 million to pay-TV.
The two main TV groups in Spain – Mediaset and Atresmedia – accounted for 85.4% of TV ad revenues, with the total rising to 89.8% in the FTA sector.
