There are currently between 700,000-800,000 IPTV/OTT subscribers in Ukraine, according to Boris Danilov, CEO of Digital Screens.
Speaking in an interview with Broadcast published by Media Group Ukraine, he added that if IPTV is considered a broadcast technology with a controlled access network, there are no more than 150,000- 200,000 IPTV subscribers, with the remainder being for OTT services.
As previously reported by Broadband TV News, last month Oll.TV, which is operated by Digital Screens, became the first licensed OTT service in Ukraine.
Danilov said that the cost of its OTT licence was in the tens of thousands rather than millions of hryvna as the company managed to save money through the reissue of licences into one that allows the provision of software services throughout Ukraine.
He also said that Oll.TV continues to work with the OTT service ivi as it gives its customers access to the latter’s high quality content.
Furthermore, although Oll.TV has considered the advertising business model, it currently only uses the subscription and to a much lesser degree transactional business models.
