Anacom has approved a draft decision that will move DTT from the 700MHz band to facilitate the launch of new 5G broadband and telephony services.
It gives details of the technical changes that will need to be made by operator MEO.
A pilot is planned for the second half of November to test the changes at a micro-local level.
While many consumers will notice no change at all, those who receive signals on channels at the upper end of the band will need to retune their receivers. There will be no need to upgrade antennas.
The changes to the DTT network in Portugal follow a ruling by the b European Parliament and Council Decision requiring Member States that restricts the use of the 700 MHz band by terrestrial systems until 30 June 2020.
