Sony launches FTA UK movie channel

July 31, 2019 11.07 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Sony Pictures Television is to launch its first free-to-air movie network in the UK.

Sony Movies Network will make its debut on September 10, 2019 and will bring together Sony Movies, Sony Movies Action, Sony Movies Classic and a seasonal pop-up channel Sony Movies Christmas. At the same time Sony-owned True Entertainment will be rebranded as Sony Channel.

The company says it wants to “form one cohesive Sony-branded portfolio.”

All of the channels will be available on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

The Sony library includes titles such as Hitch, Air Force One, Vanilla Sky and Bad Boys.

Sony Channel will feature a mix of sitcoms, nostalgia and popular gameshows, including Murder She Wrote, Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, TJ Hooker and classic Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Sony is attempting to unify its various brands; it purchased the True Movies group in June 2014, but up to now has maintained the original branding. As a result of the new branding Movies4Men is becoming Sony Movies Action, and True Movies becomes Sony Movies Classic.
