Tivo has added a further patent infringement claim in its ongoing dispute with Comcast over who owns the rights to set-top box technology.
In its latest claim, Tivo’s Rovi Corp is suing the Sky owner in the Los Angeles Federal Court, claiming recording hardware breaches six patents, these include cloud and multi-room DVR features.
“We believe Comcast’s Xfinity X1 continues to infringe Rovi’s cloud and multi-room DVR patents – a vital component of home entertainment,” said Arvin Patel, Rovi’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, in a statement released Monday. “Rovi has invested over a billion dollars into our innovative patent portfolio and products, and we are extremely proud of our patent portfolio of over 1000 issued patents in the US.”
In response Comcast, while not commenting on the latest allegations said Rovi had deployed an increasingly obsolete patent portfolio in an unsuccessful litigation campaign. “Rovi launched this campaign in April 2016 by asserting infringement of 15 patents – 14 of which have been held to be invalid and/or not infringed by Comcast, or have been withdrawn by Rovi.
