The issue appeared to be global with complaints coming from the UK, the United States, Australia and India.
Users were advised to reboot their product.

The voice activated Google Home also required an update.
On social media Google was apologetic and helpful to consumers affected by the issue, but was not forthcoming on what had caused the problem in the first place.
The implication is that the villain was an earlier update.
