Almost two out of five (37%) of internet users aged six and above in France have already used VOD or SVOD services at least once.
According to Mediametrie, quoting the findings of the VoD360 study, conducted online (CAWI) from December 27, 2017 to January 15, 2018, this represents an 11-percentage point increase in the total in 2016. It also notes that over the last 12 months 20% of internet users have used an SVOD service at least once.
Significantly, 37% of internet users could spontaneously name a VOD or SVOD platform. This is a stable figure despite the arrival of acknowledged new players. SVOD is also a shared experience, with on average three people using one SVOD in the same household.
Mediametrie in addition notes that SVOD’s strength lies in the diversity of its content and all genres – series (91%), films (87%), cartoons (44%) and documentaries (40%) – are available to watch. Furthermore, 92% of SVOD users aged 15 and above watch several episodes of series in a row and 83% binge watch. Also, while US series were the most represented in the top 10 VOD titles, 56% of users said it was important for them to see French produced films and series in an SVOD catalogue.
Other key stats include that 13% of the population had rented at least one video during the previous 12 months. This was two percentage points higher than the previous year.
In addition, only 8% of internet users indicated that they had already purchased a VOD.
As previously reported by Broadband TV News, separate research from Mediametrie indicates that over half of French viewers already watch TV with a second screen.
