Sky Deutschland opens sports broadcast centre

July 27, 2017 22.11 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

German pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland has officially opened its new sports broadcast and production centre Sky Sport HQ on July 27, 2017.

In the building located next to Sky Deutschland’s corporate headquarter in Unterföhring near Munich, the broadcaster will produce its complete range of sports programmes: live sports on pay-TV, free-to-air sports news channel Sky Sport News HD, the new sports portal skysport.de and the social media offers.

Sky Deutschland will create around 90 new jobs in the areas of studio production and playout in the new venue in which it invested a two-digit million Euro amount.

The building which was converted in 10 months, used to be the home of the RIVA television studios that opened in the 1960’s and were used by public broadcasters Bayerischer Rundfunk and ZDF. Besides gigs by stars like the Rolling Stones, ABBA, Udo Jürgens, Roy Black, Siegfried & Roy and Bud Spencer, the careers of famous German TV entertainment show hosts like Thomas Gottschalk, Hans Rosenthal, Ilja Richter and Günter Jauch started in these studios.

All studio programmes and conference coverage of Sky Sport will be produced in the building. Sky Sport HQ was taken into service in early July 2017 for the Wimbledon coverage.

The new broadcast centre announced in June 2016 spreads across a total surface of 4,600 square metres 1,700 of which are uses for four studios. 50 kilometres of cable were laid, 1,000 terabyte of storage capacity are available and up to 76 live signals can be processed at the same time.
