German subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service Watchever has confirmed that it will close down at the end of 2016.
Existing customers can continue to use the offer until 31 December, but new registrations are no longer possible, Watchever explains in a Facebook post. On a special website, customers are informed about the closure details.
In July 2016, it became known that French parent company Vivendi pulls the emergency break because of the high losses and wants to shut down Watchever at the end of the year. A previous attempt to sell the SVOD service apparently failed.
Watchever launched in January 2013, but, despite its early introduction, didn’t manage to succeed against the strong competition in the German video streaming market dominated by Amazon, Netflix and ProSiebenSat.1’s maxdome.
